you're so vain.
I just went to the hairdressers, officially, for the first time. My mom is an accomplished hairdresser, so she has done my hair ever since I can remember. However, I was curious to go and since my hair was a mess, I thought I'd use the time to wash and dry my hair. It was great, my hair is soft and I feel like I can take on the day with a bit more confidence.
I took this oppurtunity, to finish up writing on vanity. I asked you for some of your opinions and was suprised to find that most people agreed with that statement. Maybe I just have some wise friends, but most of the time I don't think it sinks in that mostly everything we do is based on our vanity rather than consciousness.
The other day, I went to a concert, and was amused to find so many "alternative" people. At first I thought it was awesome, so many of the people I relate to in the same place. However, as my friend and I waited in line, I started to notice how everyone looked alike. Same fashionable clothes, retro glasses, men wore t-shirts and vests, and all the girls had their hair up in a bun. What I found amusing is that, every single one of those people, think in some form that they are separate from the others. However, that's not the case. They end up blending from one stylish person to the other, deprived of what they thought was their own individuality.
Sadly or not, we are all vain. As humans we want to pride ourselves in who we are. Where we came from, what we're going to do. We all have god complexes; we have a little piece of earth in which we have power and we use it. Sometimes it brings others good but most of the time, our vanity ends up hurting someone. We don't open ourselves, because we want to make sure we're better than our neighboor. Our vanity ends up effecting all the other areas of our life.
However, vanity gives us the confidence to persevere. We don't want to give up when we fail, we fight, we cry but somehow we end up soldiering on. Especially when they're things close to our heart's desire.
I'm not sure. I know I don't want to be governed by vanity, because most of the time you need to count on other people to fuel your vanity. I think that's the problem. Because everything you end up doing, has to do with what people think of you in the first place.

hahaha...i love your last line! Too cute! I agree though....to some extent most people have some sort of vanity in them, which I attribute to human nature. Good post! :)
ReplyDeleteI didn't go to a barber until I was 18 thanks to my dad. I've had similar thoughts in crowds, noticing how everyone wants to be special and yet they blend in. I think you're partly right about vanity in a way being vulnerability because it depends on approval of others. But so often vanity remains after disapproval from others. The last thing anyone is ever willing to sacrifice is their high view of themselves.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you entirely. I see people categorizing themselves and being vain no matter what group they belong too. I am no exception, I just try to remember its not necessary.
