sleep, don't weep

"Sleep, don't weep" he held her closely, as she sat staring blankly into space. The day had unwrapped itself and had left her stranded, into the ever-growing familiar feeling of alienation.
She tried hard to snap out of it, but all she could think of was the room getting closer and closer, closing in and leaving her with no space to breathe.
He started singing, some sweet song she had heard before. She couldn't listen long enough, she wanted to keep crawling into the hole she was digging herself in.
"Everything is going to be alright." He whispered and kept holding her.
As she fell asleep, she wished that he was right.
